My parents used to file a joint tax return. My mother had a stroke in July and she became disabled.....?

Can my father claim her as a dependent? My mother had an income for 2008. Do they have to file separate or they can still file jointly in case my father can claim her as a dependent? I can give u more details if it's needed. Thank you!
