Braided Lines and Leaders?

I have been using braided lines in all my catfish rods and recently it has come to my attention some fisherman tie leaders of mono or fluorocarbon onto the business end of their lines. I need advice on how long to make such a leader, if it really is that important, and what type of line to use. Thanks.
